Centers for Disease Control (CDC) 4-4-20 Update: Interim Considerations for Infection Prevention and Control of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Inpatient Obstetric Healthcare Settings. Recommendations now say separation should be done on a case-by-case basis and should utilize shared decision making with the patient.

Original Center for Disease Control (CDC) Recommendations as of Feb 18, 2020. These recommended separation of infants and birthing parents who were suspected or confirmed for COVID-19 infection. It mentioned discussing separation with the birthing parent and rooming-in if it was the“mother’s wishes” but did not specify shared-decision making should be utilized.

Birth Protocol information

NACPM Webinar, “Coronavirus: Midwives on the Front Line” Presented March 19, 2020. The first hour is general information on pregnancy and COVID-19 with Aviva Romm. The next 1.5 hours are 4 midwives (2 birth center, and 2 home birth practices) explaining their current protocols and answering questions.

Health Foundations Birth Center Protocols and Information to Patients

Hospital protocols: Citizens for Midwifery is especially concerned about parents receiving sufficient informed decision making if they are suspected or confirmed to have a COVID-19. Current CDC guidelines (as of 3-24-20) recommend birthing patients and their healthy babies be separated at birth. However, the same guidelines state the decision to be separated should be discussed with the mother and provide recommendations to limit transmission to the newborn.
